Grid Genius started with a simple question: what if crossword puzzles could be about anything? Traditional crosswords are limited by what a human constructor can build in hours or days. AI changes that equation entirely.
I'm Anil Rao K, a software developer who builds Grid Genius as a solo project. I design the product, write the code, and continuously optimize the AI prompts and generation algorithms to produce the best puzzles possible. The goal is to create crossword puzzles that are genuinely fun to solve — on any topic, at any difficulty level, available to anyone.
Grid Genius uses large language models to generate crossword puzzles from scratch. Given a topic and difficulty level, the AI selects vocabulary, writes clues, and arranges words into a valid grid — all in under 30 seconds. Every puzzle is unique. The system generates fresh daily challenges, supports custom topics, and adapts clue difficulty from beginner-friendly definitions to cryptic wordplay.
Behind the scenes, I continuously refine the generation prompts and algorithms to improve puzzle quality — better word selection, more engaging clues, and cleaner grid layouts. Every improvement is tested by solving the puzzles myself before it goes live.
